Quitting Social Media? More Like Taking a Prolonged Break

One would assume that someone who loved posting on social media, like me, would have invested more time in sharing life and thoughts online during the Wuhan virus pandemic. Instead, I almost stopped posting altogether.

Social media, at least to me, is more like an extension of the relationships I have established in the real world. Posting and sharing on the Internet help strengthen the relationship. But when interactions in real life disappear, I also start to lose interest in social media. There is no more sense of connection; even though photos and videos online enable you to peek into someone else’s life from their own, unique perspective, it feels unnatural. When everyone started forming bubbles around themselves for the sake of reducing physical contact, the clash of emotions and sensations diminished at the same time. It would not be easily substituted by scrolling on social media.

Now that we have (mostly) gone back to normal, as I start meeting people again physically instead of just through a stream of bits and bytes, I feel the urge to start sharing my (not-so-exciting) adventures again.

Digital territories shall and will never replace the interpersonal relationships formed through physical contact. Well, at least to me. Maybe I’m a weirdo who doesn’t fit in. But who cares lol.
