Preliminary works started in late September 2022 at the set-to-be-demolished houses located at 1190 Main Street West to make way for McMaster University’s new student residence building. This post will be tracking the progress of this project, which is slated for completion by 2024.

The planning for a new student residence dates back to 2017. A City of Hamilton Public Notice was pictured in May 2021 regarding the planned development.

Police presence and movements of specialized construction vehicles were spotted around the fenced-off houses on Thursday (29 September 2022) at noon after a fire broke out the previous day, with one person killed during the incident.

It was announced by the University on 20 October 2022 that the new building would be named after Lincoln Alexander, the former MP representing Hamilton West and former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario (1985-1991).

Demolition of existing properties started in mid-November 2022. The site was seen cleared of houses at the beginning of January 2023.
